A National Commitment to Openness and Transparency

The Canadian Transparency Agreement for Animal-Based Science is a national initiative that brings together organizations committed to open, accurate, and proactive communication about the use of animals in science.

Animal-based science plays an important role in advancing human and animal health, supporting innovation, protecting the environment, and advancing scientific knowledge. The Canadian Transparency Agreement encourages organizations to engage openly with the public about when, how, and why animals are used in science, while highlighting the ethical oversight, animal welfare standards, and scientific considerations that guide this work in Canada.

By becoming a signatory, organizations demonstrate their commitment to transparency, accountability, and public engagement.

We will make relevant information accessible and support informed discussion about animal-based science.

Provide Opportunities for Public Learning

We will proactively help the public learn about animal use in science, the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), and the oversight systems that govern animal-based research in Canada.

We will share our experiences, track our progress, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement in openness and transparency.

Why Transparency Matters

Public trust in science depends on openness and accountability. By communicating clearly about animal-based science, organizations can:

  • Improve public understanding of scientific research
  • Demonstrate commitment to animal welfare and ethical oversight
  • Foster informed dialogue about the role of animals in science
  • Increase confidence in Canada's research community
  • Share advancements in Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement (the 3Rs)
